Process

Pieces cut from my designed templates.

The box is built meticulously then slowly dried to prevent cracking.

Slip trailing will leave a raised drawing of the trees. This part is what stirs me the most ...

The boxes are fired once (bisqued) in the electric kiln. Liquid wax is then applied solely to the slip trailed designs in order to separate it from the area that will be glazed. The waxes areas will become black after the final firing.

Meticulous attention is paid at choosing the glazes and to the different areas to be glazed (colored).

Observing glaze development during the final firing in the raku kiln. Fired to 1000C!

Transporting the pieces from the kiln to the fire box. I'm truly grateful for my family's help in this crucial stage.

Once the red hot piece sets the combustible material on fire, the lid will be placed on the can to let the fire burn without oxygen. This will add beautiful carbon marks and allow the copper to shine through in areas.

Final result after the pieces have been meticulously scrubbed and cleaned.
